The Dallas fraternity hazing lawyer at the Doan Law Firm helps fraternity hazing injury victims protect their legal rights
“Hazing” has been defined as “… humiliating and sometimes dangerous initiation rituals, especially as imposed on college students seeking membership to a fraternity or sorority.”

The practice of hazing has traditionally been associated with the military, military service schools, and college fraternities. Although many schools and other institutions have publicly renounced the practice of hazing, the reality of the situation is that many schools have turned a blind eye to such actions that continue to be practiced “in secret.”

At the national level, every major college fraternity has supposedly renounced the practice of hazing and has issued “guidelines” that each fraternity house is supposed to follow. This raises the question: “If hazing has been ‘abandoned’, why do you still need ‘guidelines’?”

Fraternity Hazing Is Dangerous

When fraternity hazing occurs, the physical act of administering hazing and supervision of those acts is undertaken by fraternity members who have no training in either exercise physiology or basic first aid. Despite this lack of training, there is no evidence that hazing has ever been conducted with emergency medical services personnel on scene in case an emergency situation developed.

This lack of planning is disturbing when you consider some of the injuries that have occurred during fraternity hazings:

  • acute alcohol poisoning, with blood alcohol levels often 3 to 4 times the legal intoxication levels
  • hypothermia, a body temperature at least 5 degrees below normal
  • fractures
  • concussions
  • blunt abdominal trauma
  • drowning and near-drowning
  • burns
  • death, often from multiple causes

Fraternity Hazing Is a Crime in Texas
The Texas Education Code, chapter 37, defines “hazing” and then specifically prohibits any activity that involves a

“… reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization … any type of physical brutality … any type of physical activity… that subjects the student to an unreasonable risk of harm or that adversely affects the mental or physical health or safety of the student…”
In most cases, any violations of the above-quoted law are only misdemeanors if they were to be prosecuted at all.

Time Limits on Fraternity Hazing Injury Lawsuits

As in all cases of personal injury lawsuits filed in Texas, any lawsuit must be filed within two years of the date the injury occurred. Lawsuits filed after than time limit is subject to rejection by the court and those responsible will walk away unpunished for their actions.
