A 61-year-old worker at the joint military base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst was killed last month in a motorcycle accident involving the motorcycle he was driving and an SUV, according to base authorities.
The incident, which is still under investigation, occurred on Range Road at about 7:20 a.m. and resulted in no other reported injuries. The accident, the second motorcycle fatality at the base in the past five weeks, apparently left the driver of the SUV uninjured.
The Joint Base Safety Office reportedly conducts motorcycle safety classes that are mandatory for active-duty personnel who ride motorcycles and are available for other employees. The other accident occurred at a different base location on April 20 and killed Army Reserve Sgt. Mary Russell is also still under investigation. The name of the employee involved in the recent crash is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification, reports say.
As a civilian, the worker who died has different rights from his military counterpart. Responsibilities are also different for families of military and civilian workers. Any family of the civilian victim may be compensated differently from his military counterpart, and vice-versa.
