Family of Norfolk Man Settle Suit for Half-Million Dollars

|

The employers of a dockworker's family, Virginia International Terminals Inc., has agreed to pay that family $500,000 to settle a lawsuit brought by the surviving family members of a port worker killed at Portsmouth Marine Terminal in 2007, reports say.

The estate of Vernon Leroy White Jr. alleged negligence on the part of Virginia International Terminals and two workers after White was crushed to death when a cargo container crushed him. White, 42, was survived by a son and daughter, who, along with other family, sued the parties for $20-million dollars.

Although Virginia International Terminals argued that because White was on the job, the civil court had no jurisdiction and the matter was a worker's compensation case. But because White was on a lunch break, he wasn't on the job and the family had grounds for a civil case, reports say.

During the investigation, the families of the dead and the injured will likely have questions. In a tragedy like this one, survivors' questions need to be addressed by experts.
