Toddler Nearly Drowns in Inflatable Pool

|

A two-year-old child almost drowned in a backyard pool earlier this month as the mother's boyfriend, who was watching the infant at the time, walked away to talk on his cell phone, reports say.

The near drowning accident occurred in Clay Township, IN, police said, in a small plastic inflatable, above-ground pool. The toddler was left alone for just an instant and when the mother walked outside to check on him, the youngster was face-down in the pool.

The child, reported as 23-month-old Cole Smith, was rushed to the hospital, with several police cars escorting in formation around the ambulance. He remains in a medically-induced coma in a pediatric intensive care unit. Reports say the toddler's condition is improving.
