A pilot and passenger flying an experimental plane were injured late last month when the aircraft crashed at Northern California's Rancho Murieta Airport.
Reports say Charlie James Morehead, 75, of Cameron Park was transported by air to University of California Davis Medical Center after he crashed his unproven plane as he practiced landings. On one practice landing, the plane came in too fast and took a big bounce, and instead of aborting he tried to force it down and the nose pitched forward and it careened away from the runway until the nose dug into the dirt and it flipped over.
Another man, who was unidentified other than his age, 47 years old, had minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the medical center. Emergency crews were summoned to the scene and found the single-engine experimental plane upside down on the runway, a fuel leak jeopardizing the initial rescue.
After firefighters stopped the leak, the two men were found upside down and trapped in the aircraft. They were removed from the craft - which involved lifting up the wing. All aircraft operations in and out of the airport were temporarily suspended. The Federal Aviation Administration will investigate, say reports.
