While walking on railroad tracks near their school, two teenagers were struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Delaware County yesterday morning.
The girls, reported as at Interboro Senior High School students Gina Gentile and Vanessa Dorwart, from Glenolden, were supposed to be in class at the time of the 10:30 incident. A third girl was with them when the accident occurred, reports say. She was uninjured.
The incident happened on a cold morning amid the snow of a winter storm. They were struck near the Norwood SEPTA station by a southbound, high-speed Acela train running between Boston and Washington. The train can get up to a speed of 110 m.p.h. through that area, reports say.
The girls had apparently been upset about the death last month of Gentile's boyfriend, William Bradley V, 17, who was hit and killed by a car while riding his bicycle. There is a possibility the girls might have committed suicide. Police are also still investigating.
