An Amtrak train hit and killed a teenager as she was on her way to school, after which service was suspended for some time in the Baltimore area as an investigation searched for caused of the accident. The incident delayed trains all along the US Northeast corridor.
The victim has been reportedly identified as 14-year-old Ann Marie Stickle of Middle River. Reports say she had been walking along the tracks with a friend when she was hit from behind. The friend was not injured.
Pedestrians often misjudge the distance of trains while standing at road level - which is why there are so many pedestrian/train accidents. People wandering on the tracks often have much less time to move from the tracks than they think.
In the event of a train injury, there is possible compensatory relief for the families of the victims.
