Nine people were killed and 15 injured when a train smashed into a trolley which had stopped at an unmanned railway crossing near Shivrajpur, India last month.
Police have launched a manhunt for the driver of the trolley, who is now accused and under investigation for the accidental deaths of all of those aboard the trolley. The driver's house has been searched, but he has not yet been found, reports say.
The incident took place when a train travelling from Lucknow to Kasganj hit the trolley at around 9.30 in the morning. The trolley was on its way from Uddhavpur Nawada to Jagdishpur and most of the occupants of the ill-fated vehicle were laborers. Among the dead were a woman, four girls and an equal number of boys, all aged between 14 and 18.
The district's railway administration has asked the state government to pay compensation to the victims' kin and the injured, reports said.
Public transit injury and death are especially tragic because the victims trust their driver with their well-being every time they use the transit system. When one has an incident, public trust is compromised.
