In an ironic tragedy, Australian Matthew Appleby drowned on the day he was to take his exam to earn his lifesaving medallion.

Gosford, Australia officials announced the tragic coincidence after Appleby, 16, was found on Forresters Beach two weeks after he was reported missing. Reports say the preliminary finding was that his death was caused by drowning.

Appleby's school backpack and shoes were found on the beach during an extensive search of nearby beaches and coastal trails where Matthew was known to go. Reports say the conditions on the day Matthew vanished were treacherous. He was last seen at a bus stop near his home after he walked his brother to school.
