A young surfer was killed last month after a shark attack off Surf Beach, approximately 120 miles northwest of Los Angeles, reports say.
Lucas Ransom McKain, 19, a chemistry student at the University of California at Santa Barbara, was approximately a hundred yards from shore when the shark attacked him, biting through the surfboard and severing his left leg. The wound was mortal and he died shortly afterward, according to reports.
Risking another attack, a friend swam out and brought the injured man to the shore, but rescuers were unable to save him, reports say.
Official believe the shark behind the attack to be between twelve and 18 feet long, but are not sure whether it was a great white shark. This is the first shark death in California since 2008.
