Two suspects were arrested in a fatal traffic accident at 3200 Telephone Road, Houston, TX that occurred in the evening early in October.
After an off-duty Houston police officer witnessed two men assaulting a male behind a restaurant on the Gulf Freeway service road, the officer followed them at a safe distance and advised a dispatcher of the suspects' location. An HPD Helicopter then followed the suspects and provided dispatcher with location changes.
The suspects reached 610 and Telephone Road, and a marked HPD patrol vehicle attempted to make a traffic stop. It was then that the suspects fled the scene in the car. Traveling northbound on Telephone Road at a high speed, the patrol officer was unable to stay in pursuit. As the suspects continued fleeing on Telephone Road, they struck the rear of a gray Toyota Corolla and lost control of their own Chevy Suburban.
The Suburban flipped on its side, struck a telephone pole and slid down the street until it came to a stop at the corner of Telephone and Oakcliff. The driver of the Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene and his male passenger, 32, was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital. Both suspects were arrested shortly after the crash.
Hernan Rodriguez Torres, 37, is charged with intoxication manslaughter; Rodolfo Lopez Salinas, 27, is charged with felony evading arrest. The victim, 41, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
