Proton Pump Inhibitors Show Possible Link to Birth Defects

|

Reports say that there is evidence that using protpn pump inhibitorsin the first trimester of pregnancy could increase the chance of cardiac defects. Such inhibitors are for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease, stomach ulcers include Nexium, Dexilant, Prilosec, Zegerid and Prevacid, among others.

A 2010 study suggested that those using proton pump inhibitors were twice as likely to have a child with a heart defect compared to those who did not take the drugs. Three types of birth defects were specified in the study, reports say: septal defects and right and left ventricular defects.

Proton pump inhibitors have also been linked to a variety of other side effects, reports say. Recently, the U.S,. Food and Drug Administrationwarned that long-term use could result in hypomagnesemia. The FDA made it mandatory that that information be added to the labels for all prescription proton pump inhibitors.
