According to reports, some 24 Florida homes built by Habitat for Humanity were constructed using defective Chinese Drywall. The homes, which were built between 2006 and 2009 with Chinese drywall donated through Habitat's national organization, have evidently been linked to illnesses from noxious gasses the sheetrock emits.
The Consumer Products Safety Commissionhas received more than 3,600 reports from residents in 39 states, as well as the District of Columbia, American Samoa, and Puerto Rico regarding potentially hazardous Chinese drywall.
The drywall is said to emit sulfurous gases, which are currently being blamed for significant damage to HVAC systems, smoke detectors, electrical wiring, metal plumbing components, and other household appliances. In addition, residents have complained of health problems. The CPSC has recommended that homes built with defective Chinese drywall be gutted and re-sheetrocked with unaffected drywall products.
