Reports say that according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, cell phone use played a role in 18 percent of all fatal distracted driving crashes.
More than three-quarters of teens under 17 have cell phones and almost 90% of those use texting. Moreover, more than half of those texters use the capability daily, and the majority more than 50 texts a day. Of those, more than a third admitted to texting while driving, reports say. And up to 40% of passengers claim to have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone, saying they feared for the safety of themselves and others.
The study was reportedly based on a parent-teen survey that sampled less than 1000 teens and pre-teens in 4 US cities in 2009.
