Surgical Procedure Possibly Add to Illnesses

|

A popular, high-intensity cancer therapy that utilizes pinpoint radiation, could be putting patients at significant risk, reports say.

The cancer treatment surgery, called Stereotactic radiosurgery, targets tumors on the brain or spinal cord. Its advantage is that it does little damage to surrounding tissue. But according to recently published reports, the amount of radiation is so concentrated and intense that if not used correctly, overdoses in radiation can occur.

At least one patient was left comatose and nearly 100 patients had been given the wrong dosage of radiation and were at risk for potential long-term problems, reports say. Mistakes involving stereotactic radiosurgery are not solely the problems of the doctors or technicians performing the surgery, but are indicative of shortcomings in the regulation of medical radiation devices and treatements, reports say.
