Darvon, and the related drug Darvocet, may have been found to increase the risk of heart attacks and bone fractures in elderly arthritis patients, reports from a new study finds.
Reports say that painkillers like Oxycontin, Darvon and Darvocet increase the risk of death by 87-percent, as compared to drugs such as Ibuprofen.
The reported study, in which some 12000 people participated, says that those patients treated with narcotic painkillers known as opiods were linked to a 68 percent increase in overall related health issues from intestinal bleeding to stroke and heart attack to fractures.
And according to some reports, the risk of heart attack seen with narcotic painkillers was higher than that seen even in the now-banned Vioxx and Bextra. The problems have reportedly caused the US Food & Drug Administration to ask drug makers to stop sales of proproxyphene, citing serious and possibly fatal heart rhythm problems. Propoxyphene is the active ingredient in both Darvon and Darvocet -- which were recalled by Xanodynde Pharmaceuticals last month, reports say.
