Passenger Dies on NY-Bound Flight

|

A passenger died while in-flight on an American Airlines flight recently, with the victim's family claiming the crew ignored her pleas, reports say.

The victim, Carine Desir, 44, died after a nearly-full Haiti-to-New York flight after complaining of not feeling well and being very thirsty after she ate a meal. The flight home from Port-au-Prince to John F. Kennedy International Airport took a turn for the worst when she then claimed she was having trouble breathing. She asked for oxygen, reports say, and a flight attendant twice refused her request.

The flight attendant did, however, discuss the situation with another flight attendant, and both returned to Desir within a few minutes, reports say. By then Disir was in distress and the attendants began administering oxygen, but reports say the tank may have been empty.

Passengers on the 263-passanger Airbus A300 allegedly reported that a second bottle was used, which seemed to be working.  By then the woman has evidently gone into cardiac arrest, because a defibrillator was used to try to restore a normal heart rhythm.

The pilot, in the meantime, began to divert the liner to Miami, 45 minutes away. Desir collapsed. Desir was pronounced dead by a doctor aboard and the flight continued to New York without stopping. Desir's body was moved to the floor of the first-class section and covered with a blanket, Oliver said. Passengers disembarked through an exit behind the first-class section. Desir died of complications from heart disease and diabetes, reports say.
