Bayer Healthcare's popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin are under fire for possible links to an increase in blood clots, reports say.
Bayer cites two studies it commissioned as proof that the drugs are safe, but other studies have found that contraceptives similar to Yaz and Yasmin increase the risk of blood clots more than other types of birth control pills.
Yasmin and Yaz are reportedly made with a synthetic progestin called drospirenone. But the synthetic progestin reportedly has health risks that have been cited in several cases. European studies are the basis on which most of the claims originate.
In the meantime, Bayer insists that Yaz and Yasmin are safe, citing their own studies that say there was no greater risk of mortality, cancer or cardiovascular problems from pills with drospirenone than other oral contraceptives, reports say.
The publicity has reportedly been sufficient enough to have the U.S. Food & Drug Administration begin their own investigation. The study is ongoing and preliminary results of their findings had not been made public. So far in the United States, however, the two drugs have reportedly been named in about 1,000 lawsuits
