Epilepsy Drugs May Cause Pregnancy Complications

|

Reports say a study appearing in the International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that nearly 200 women with epilepsy involved in the study were more likely to experience pregnancy complications compared to women who did not have the disorder, with nearly eight-percent suffering from severe preeclampsia, compared to less than 3 percent of women who did not take the drugs.

The study also suggests that epileptic women taking the medications were also twice as likely to have labor induced and emergency C-sections compared to epileptic woman who were not taking the mediations. There was also an increased risk of bleeding in early pregnancy in women using the medications.

The study also noted that the findings do not prove the medications caused the complications, but they did suggest that epileptic women visit their doctors before and during pregnancy to discuss possible complications.
