Reports say that after conferring with U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission officials, Big Lots, of Columbus, Ohio, has voluntarily recalled about 30,000 defective metal futon beds. At least one entrapment death has been linked to the beds, reports say. Reports say that children can become entrapped in the futon when the metal frame is lowered to the flat position.
Reports say a three-year-old Iowa boy's head and neck became trapped early in 2010 when the frame was lowered and the weight of the futon prevented the child from breathing and escaping. The child died at the hospital.
The recalled metal beds were evidently sold exclusively by Big Lots stores, manufactured in China. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has advised consumers to immediately stop using the beds and to contact Big Lots for a free repair kit.
