Texas City Dike Beach Victim Named

|

The name of the five-year-old Houston boy who drowned at the Texas City Dike Beach was released by officials Friday, reports say.

The child, Fredy Lazo, drowned after slipping off a float at the Texas City Dike beach Wednesday. Lazo, who was with his mother, Lucia Joya Benitez, 33, about 4 P.M. when they suddenly realized they were in deep water. At that point, the youngster slipped off the float and under the water, reports say.

Jessica Lazo, 12, the boy's sister, and Benitez' boyfriend, Antonio Sanchez, were on a second floatation device when the accident occurred, but were too far away to assist, reports say. An unidentified woman on a jet-ski type vehicle found Fredy and pulled him back to shore. He was transported to the hospital where he died.

The beach has virtually no warning signs of the dangers of the beach. This is the second separate incident in which drownings occurred at the Texas City Dike Beach. In October three people drowned in the same stretch of beach.

The Doan Law Firm is representing the family of the three victims from that tragedy.
