A ruptured gas line caused an explosion in San Bruno, California, killing four people, injuring dozens, and destroying almost 40 homes.
A natural gas explosion and inferno turned parts of San Bruno, adjacent to the San Francisco International Airport, into wreckage. Emergency services spent early this month sifting through the debris for bodies.
In all, four died, including Jacqueline Greig, 44, and he 13-year-old daughter, Janessa, whose house at 1670 Claremont Drive was destroyed. Ironically, Greig worked for the California Public Utilities Commission and was a member of the natural gas committee. Many others were treated at hospitals, and at least three were in critical condition Friday.
The 30-inch pipeline, maintained by Pacific Gas and Electric Co., ruptured and caused a firestorm that destroyed 37 homes in the Crestmoor neighborhood on the other side of the freeway from the airport and badly damaged eight other structures.
