A study conducted by the Cancer Prevention Institute of California involving 80 Vietnamese women from 20 different salons in California claims that Toluene, a solvent used in nail salons can cause illness.
Toulene was said to be associated with neurological, reproductive, and endocrine damage, and workers in the study wore a monitor that measured amounts of the chemical – along with ethyl acetate, and isopropyl acetate.
The study found that average toluene levels were about twice the recommended amount for the employees. Reports also said that nearly thirty-five percent reported irritations of the nose, throat, lungs, skin, and eyes. The study recommended more worker safety, including policy changes to occupational exposure limits, reports say.
