A natural gas line exploded earlier this month outside a large Minneapolis supermarket, sending flames hundreds of feet into the air and creating a mess during rush hour. No serious injuries were reported.
The explosion, which occurred just a few hundred feet from the I35 freeway during morning rush-hour traffic, burned parked vehicles and blew a hole in the street, forcing an eight-block evacuation area and a closure of the freeway. Heat from the fire damaged some lines, street lights and electrical poles in the immediate area.
Residents in pajamas, some carrying children, milled about in the streets outside the cordoned-off area until about midday when they were allowed to return home. The gas line, which was a major line in Minneapolis, also forced a grade school to be evacuated, with students sent to another school for the day.
