Study Wants Restrictions for Energy Drinks

|

A recent study in the medical journal Pediatrics says Energy drinks are dangerous and that they can cause heart palpitations, seizures, strokes, and even sudden death in young children and teens.

The pediatrics report went on to say that energy drinks should be regulated as stringently as tobacco, alcohol, and prescription medicines, reports say. The ingredients found in most energy drinks – caffeine and guarana – are mild stimulants. But if abused, they can cause myriad problems.

Symptoms can be as simple as nausea and diarrhea. But they can also include seizures, hallucinations, rapid heart rate, chest pain,n, and high blood pressure. The study also said that long-term use needs further research.

Reports also say that the American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that 677 cases of energy drink overdoses and side effects were reported nationwide from October through December of last year. So far, 331 cases were reported in 2011, which mostly involved children and teens. A quarter of the 2011 cases involved kids younger than six.
