Denture Study Allegedly Delayed by Insider

|

Reports say that a 2006 study linking zinc poisoning found in denture cream to neuropathy was delayed for nearly two years because one of its reviewers cast doubt on its conclusions. However, reports also say that the reviewer was found to have been a paid consultant for Procter & Gamble, the maker of zinc-containing Fixodent denture cream.

Finally published in 2008 in the journal Neurology, the study said that in four patients who used excessive amounts of denture cream zinc suffered from neuropathy and other neurological symptoms typical of zinc poisoning. The study was reported to conclude that excess use of denture cream may have been responsible for their neuropathy, reports say.

Consuming zinc in the amounts the subjects admitted to using would possibly lead to anemia, bone loss, nerve damage, and other problems.

Dr. Shay, the dentist who reportedly killed the piece, made recommendations that changed the study and then allegedly sent drafts of the study to Procter & Gamble, knowing passing out the report was at least unethical and possible illegal.

Procter & Gamble has cautioned consumers about zinc in Fixodent denture creams on its website and has changed label instructions to let consumers know about the potential problems. But the zinc remains in Fixodent creams.
