Firefighter Dies in Flashover Fire

|

A Parkville, MD volunteer firefighter died earlier this month in a four-alarm Parkville apartment fire after rescuing a woman and searching for more possible survivors on the second and third floors when a flashover occurred, reports say.

The firefighter, Mark Falkenhan, 43, of the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company, died at a local hospital, reports say, while his partner managed to escape by throwing himself from a window, say reports. Two other people were also injured in the blaze.

A flashover is defined as a powerful ignition of combustible materials that occurs suddenly, almost explosive in its intensity. Falkenhan, who was the only death in the fire that reportedly started as a kitchen fire in the basement, worked at the U.S. Secret Service, say reports.
