Police officers have been praised for their efforts to save a man from drowning in a treacherous stretch of the River Trent after a bystander witnessed a man enter the water near in the early hours one Sunday morning and immediately became pulled downstream.
The police, who arrived within three minutes of the emergency call, first threw a rope to the struggling man, who was about 200ft away and being pulled away by strong currents. But the man was unable to get himself out, so one daring officer jumped nearly 20 feet and struggled to keep the man's head above water while fire crews arrived to winch him out, reports say. The man was unconscious when they finally pulled him out, but if not for the officers, the man would have been dead.
