A high school auditorium that was under construction collapsed last week, injuring three workers in the south Texas city of Santa Fe.
Emergency crews were called to the Santa Fe High School in the 16000 block of state Highway 6 Friday morning when it was reported that the structure had collapsed. The exact cause of the accident is unknown. But a crane at the construction site was needed to lift a 12-foot-long steel column off the workers to free them.
The most seriously injured worker was Richard Steinecke II, 21, of New Caney. He was tethered to a beam that broke loose. When the beams dropped, he was pulled off his beam, some 50 feet to the ground. Steinecke was flown to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and was in surgery late Friday afternoon in critical condition.
In addition, two other workers, 26-year-old Cody Key, of Conroe, and 44-year-old Escolastico Mendez, of Houston, suffered injuries also suffered injuries and were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The construction was overseen by P&C Construction and ICI Construction, the general contractor on the project.
