Nicholas Napolitano, 23, died Sunday in Newport in an attempt to save a friend from drowning. The incident began when the 21-year-old jumped from a rocky ledge into the roiling water, but immediately began struggling in the 6-8-foot waves. Instead of waiting for the firefighters, who had recently been summoned, Napolitano jumped in to help.
Firefighters arrived and were able to reach the 21-year-old and pull him out of the water, but by then were unable to find the friend, and the rescue operation officially became a recovery operation on Sunday afternoon, which ended Monday afternoon with the discovery of Napolitano's body.
