Fraternity Hazing Update: 2nd Quarter 2020

|

At The Doan Law Firm our fraternity hazing staff maintains a database of cases college fraternities that have been disciplined for hazing of new members, violating their host school’s alcohol policies, or other types of misconduct that could lead to an accidental injury. In today’s post our fraternity hazing lawyer presents a summary of second calendar quarter, 2020, additions to our fraternity hazing database.

Although many college campuses remain closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, between April 1st and June 30th of this year we added ten incidents to our database of publicly-reported cases where a fraternity was suspended for at least one year, suspended “pending investigation,” or expelled from its host campus.

Of the ten suspensions, three were for violations of school policy regarding serving alcohol to minors, five were due to reports of sexual assault, and two were for posting “inappropriate” messages or photographs on social media.

Stony Brook University (Long Island, NY) placed three fraternities (Sigma Beta Rho, Kappa Sigma, and Tau Kappa Epsilon) on interim suspension while the school investigates allegations of hazing, sexual assault, and other misconduct.

One fraternity was suspended, but later reinstated, for violating state social distancing guidelines during a party at the fraternity house.

Even though many schools are shut down or have drastically reduced operations, fraternity misconduct remains a serious problem, with alcohol policy violations and sexual abuse/assault accounting for the majority of reported fraternity suspensions.
