Americans have just finished celebrating the Labor Day weekend. Typically, the Labor Day weekend is the third deadliest holiday for deadly automobile accidents on U.S. roadways. While the full set of statistics haven’t been tabulated, and the COVID-19 pandemic has generally lowered the fatal car accident rate in the United States at least to some degree this year.
On average, about 445 people are killed in Labor Day weekend automobile accidents each. Only two other major holidays beat out Labor Day when it comes to fatal vehicle accidents. The summer season is the deadliest period on roadways. Memorial Day weekend is in second place. The Fourth of July holiday period consistently is the deadliest in the country when it comes to motoring death. Over 450 die in fatal car collisions annually over the Fourth of July holiday.
The remaining deadliest holidays on the streets and highways of the United States each year are, in descending order:
- Columbus Day
- Father’s Day
- Mother’s Day
- Halloween
- Thanksgiving
- Veterans Day
- Cinco de Mayo
Columbus Day averages about 440 deaths and is in close competition with Labor Day. Father’s Day isn’t far behind Labor Day either, with about 435 automobile accident fatalities. Cinco de Mayo is in 10th place, with about 390 fatal crashes.
Many people understandably assume that the New Year’s holiday period would be the deadliest when it comes to automobile accidents. Similarly, many individuals are surprised to hear that Christmas isn’t high on the list of holidays with the most fatal accidents. Neither the New Year’s nor Christmas holiday periods. Recent research indicates that automobile fatal accidents during the Christmas and New Year’s periods is approximately 35 percent the summertime deadly vehicle accident rate.
The National Safety Counsel examined the underlying causes of typical automobile accidents during the Labor Day holiday period. The Labor Day holiday period begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday evening and ends at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Labor Day itself. The most frequent cause of automobile accidents during the typical Labor Day period is an impaired driving. Driving under the influence accounts for 38 percent of all Labor Day holiday automobile accidents.
The rate of car accidents caused by impaired drivers is significantly above the typical annual average. The annual average rate of automobile accidents caused by drunk drivers is at 29 percent. Some people are suggesting that the rate might be a bit lower in 2020 as a result of the fact that fewer people might be on the road because of the pandemic.
