Record-Shattering Monster Dixie Fire Threatens Thousands of Homes

|

Sunday morning dawned in California with the Dixie Fire becoming the largest single wildfire in the history of the Golden State. As of the start of a new week, the catastrophic Dixie Fire was less than 25 percent contained and had destroyed more than 700 square miles in four California counties:

  • Butte
  • Plumas
  • Tehama
  • Lassen

As of midmorning on Sunday, thousands of homes were in the pathway of destruction by the Dixie Fire. The number of threatened homes and other structures is expected to increase throughout the next few days.

Current News on Threats Presented by Dixie Fire

The true nature of what and who lies in the pathway of destruction being caused by the Dixie Fire is nothing short of cataclysmic. As of this time, over 14,000 structures, including homes and businesses, are in the direct path of the massive blaze. With only 14 percent containment as of now, it is clear that hundreds if not thousands of homes and businesses will almost certainly be lost to the Dixie Fire this week.

More than 8,500 firefighters have been heroically battling the blaze. Visiting the area of the Dixie Blaze on Saturday, California Governor Gavin Newsom thanked the firefighters for their “heroic and extraordinary work.”

There is no idea as to when a majority of the Dixie Fire will be contained. The hot weather and extensive dry underbrush are making it highly complicated not only to contain the Dixie Fire but also to make projections as to when it will be substantially under control. Until that time, the blaze will continue to destroy homes, businesses, and other structures – and will continue to jeopardize human lives.

Missing Area Residents

Saturday, August 7, began with 20 people being reported missing as a result of the Dixie Fire. By Sunday morning, 16 of those reported missing had been found. There are four individuals remaining unaccounted for at this time.

Four Firefighters Hospitalized

While this is not held out to be a full accounting of firefighters injured as a result of the Dixie Fire because there have certainly been more, four firefighters were taken to the hospital on Friday. They were injured as a result of being struck by a falling tree branch.

The names of the firefighters who were taken to an area medical center have not been released. In addition, the precise nature and extent of their injuries have not been made public either. Their injuries do not appear to have been life-threatening.
