Two Children Hospitalized After McAllen Hit and Run School Bus Accident

|

Two children were taken to the hospital following a McAllen school bus accident. The school bus was transported 13 children at the time of the crash. The bus was rear-ended by a person driving a Chevy Blazer. The driver of the Blazer was speeding at the time of the collision. The Chevy Blazer driver that caused the school bus accident fled the scene.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the two students were hospitalized for unknown injuries. The names of the injured students have not been released because the are minors.

Police have asked residents in and around McAllen to be on the lookout for the driver that caused the accident. Beyond the fact that the speeding motorist was driving a Chevy Blazer, little information currently is available about the identity of the driver that caused the accident.

The children on the bus at the time of the accident are students in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District. The accident occurred north of McAllen.

Between the years 2009 and 2018, over 1,200 people were killed in school transportation related accidents in the United States. That averages to about 120 days annually school buses. About 20 percent of the victims of fatal school bus accidents were children on their way to and from school. About 40 percent of children killed in school accidents were in collisions that occurred during the morning drive time, approximately 40 percent during the evening period. The remainder were killed in school bus accidents that occurred during other times of the day, specifically when special trips were take involving school age children.

When it comes to nonfatal school bus accidents in Texas and elsewhere in the United States, the most commonplace types of injuries include:

  • Broken bones
  • Traumatic brain injury
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Neck trauma
  • Cuts and lacerations
  • Back and spinal cord damage

In some cases, injuries sustained in a school bus accident are not immediately evident. This includes serious injuries like a traumatic brain injury with symptoms that don’t develop directly after the accident. For this reason, if your child has been involved in a school bus accident and was not immediately taken to a hospital because of the nature of his or her obvious injuries, a medical evaluation should nonetheless follow a collision. An appointment can be made with a child’s pediatrician, if that can be arranged promptly. Otherwise, a visit to the emergency room might be warranted because, in the end, it truly is better to be safe than sorry – particularly when it comes to the health and wellbeing of a child.
