11 People Injured in Massive Florida Semi-Truck Accident

|

A major Florida semi-truck accident in I-95 near Jacksonville sent 11 people to area hospitals. A total of approximately 35 vehicles, including multiple semi-trucks, was involved in the massive crash. The accident spanned about one-half mile on the interstate highway. At least two people had to be pried from their vehicles.

The Florida semi-truck accident backed up traffic in both directions in the interstate. All southbound lanes of the interstate were closed as a result of the accident for about six hours.

The state of the Florida semi-truck accident victims that were transported hospitals is not known. None of the victims appear to have sustained life-threatening injuries, however. Fortunately, there were no fatalities in this latest Florida semi accident.

The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department provided rescue and emergency services at the scene. The JFRD issues a statement regarding the incident via tweet:

35 cars, 2 extrications, 11 patients transported over a half mile stretch of Highway at a complete stop looking like a parking lot takes dedicated crews, great teamwork and strong leadership. Amazing work today by all involved in this very scenario on I95 almost at rush hour.

The Florida Highway Patrol together with Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to the multivehicle accident. These two agencies are leading the investigation into more of the specifics of how the massive crash occurred in the first instance.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, what is known at this time is that there was a primary initial multivehicle crash followed by what are described as “several” secondary ones. The initial crash involved six semi-trucks and a dozen passenger automobiles. The Florida Highway Patrol has noted that it was raining at the time of the accident. Investigators do believe that weather was a factor and played some role in the massive crash.

What also appears to be known as of this time is that the chain reaction of collisions began when a passenger vehicle rear-ended another passenger car in the right lane of southbound I-95. A big rig driver evidently did not immediately see the wreck in front of him on the interstate. Rain could have been a factor in his failure to see the crash promptly. Other possible factors in such situations oftentimes include:

  • Distracted driving
  • Driving at a rate of speed beyond what weather conditions prudently permit
  • Mechanical malfunction
  • Other underlying causes or reasons

At this time, investigators have not announced any potential causes of the semi colliding into the cars involved in an accident.

In order to avoid colliding with the two vehicles involved in the initial collision, the semi driver swerved into the right lane of the highway. As a result of this maneuver, the semi undertaking evasive action ended up striking another big rig. After this occurred, a chain reaction of additional collisions took place on I-95.
