The holiday season was marred for a number of families in the United States as a result of construction accidents. A trio of construction accident incidents involving vehicles resulted in death and serious injury over the yearend holidays. The stark reality is that one of the most commonplace types of construction site accidents in the country involve deaths and injuries sustained as the result of the negligent operation or motor vehicles or malfunctions of this type of equipment.
Fairfax County, Virginia Construction Accident: Front Loader Kills Worker
Fairfax County, Virginia police and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene of a construction site accident in Lorton during the morning of December 29, 2021. A 54-year-old worker by the name of Chris Baransky was at the site performing his assigned duties. While at work, Baransky was struck and killed by a front loader.
The driver of the front loader claims that he didn’t see his coworker. Police are investigating the incident. Thus far, the Fairfax County Police Department reports that they initially have found no evidence of “criminal activity.” What this means is that thus far there has been no evidence that the front loader driver was operating the equipment recklessly or while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. With that said, the investigation is ongoing. Moreover, a determination that the front loader driver wasn’t reckless or impaired at the time of the accident doesn’t mean that he wasn’t negligent in operation of the equipment.
Orange County, California Construction Accident: Worker Struck by Detached Truck Axle
On December 29, an Orange County, California, worker was injured in what is being described as a freak accident that occurred at a site on the 405 Freeway. The worker was injured in a bizarre chain of events that began when an axle somehow detached from a dump truck that was traveling on the 405 by the roadway construction site.
After the detachment, the axle struck the construction worker, resulting in injuries that required hospitalization. The worker is expected to recover but his current condition is unavailable.
Investigators are working to ascertain the underlying reason why the axle detached from the dump truck. Odds are that the axle detached as a result of the dump truck somehow coming into contact with a concrete median located at the site of the incident, a design or manufacturing defect, or a maintenance or repair issue. There is no indication as to when the investigation into the Orange County construction site accident will be completed.
Chicago Construction Accident: Building Collapse Critically Injures Two Workers
A partial collapse of a building under construction in the Chicago suburbs resulted in the injury of two workers at the site. The pair of construction workers are hospitalized and are reported to be in critical condition.
Investigators from different agencies have been dispatched to the scene following the December 28 Chicago construction site accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, is participating in the Chicago construction accident.
As of the beginning of the new year, there has yet to be a specific information released by authorities pertaining to the cause and even the extent of the partial building collapse. What is known beyond the serious injuries sustained by the pair of workers is that the partial building collapse of the building under construction resulted a huge dust cloud and a raucous crash sound that was heard throughout the area. In other words, the collapse is significant no matter the underlying cause.
