With classrooms across Texas slowly returning to normal operations in pandemic, an increasing number of children are found in school buses across the Lone Star State heading to and from their schools. One such trip ended in a catastrophe for Lubbock children this past week. A Lubbock school bus accident sent nearly a dozen children and their bus driver to local hospitals following a collision with a semi-truck. The driver of the big rig was uninjured.
Reports from emergency rescue personnel indicate that the school bus driver and two children suffered what have been categorized as serious injuries, according to officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety. Nine other children suffered less serious injuries as a result of the Lubbock school bus accident.
A total of 11 students were on the school bus when the accident occurred just after 6:00 a.m. In other words, all of the children the school bus sustained injuries to some degree.
The seriously injured school bus driver and two children were taken to the Covenant Medical Center. Nine other children were transported to the University Medical Center.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Lubbock school bus accident has only commenced. Thus, only preliminary information has been made available about the cause of the crash.
What is known at this time is that the school bus accident happened at the intersection of FM 1585 and County Road 2500. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the school bus was heading north and the semi-truck was westbound. The semi had the right of way at the time the vehicles reached the intersection.
Officials from the Texas Department of Public Safety are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident. Nonetheless, they have determined that the school bus driver failed to yield the right of way as required. The failure to yield appears to have been the immediate cause of the Lubbock school bus accident.
As of this time, no information has been released as to why the school bus driver failed to appropriately yield the right of way to the semi. Common reasons why a bus fails to yield the right of way at an intersection include:
- Distracted driver
- Fatigued driver
- Impaired driver
- Mechanical breakdown
- Excess speed
- Speed beyond what weather conditions permit
- Combination of factors
In addition to the investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety, the school district is exploring what caused the accident as well. As of this time, the school district has made not public statement in regard to the cause of the accident.
