Texas Drunk Driving Deaths on the Rise

|

The Texas Department of Transportation reports that drunk driving deaths in the Lone Star State are on the upswing. According to the Department, last year in Texas an alarming 963 lost their lives in drunk driving accidents. 2,114 people were seriously injured in drunk driving accidents. A considerable percentage of these killed and seriously injured people were innocent victims of a drunk driver rather than the intoxicated motorist. One Texan dies about every nine hours in an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident.

The last day in Texas on which a drunk driving death did not occur was November 7, 2020.

Texas Driver Sober, No Regrets Campaign

The Texas Department of Transportation has launched a new campaign which the agency calls:

Drive Sober. No Regrets.

Through this initiative, the Texas Department of Transportation, or TxDOT, is calling upon Texas residents to drink responsible in order to prevent accidents arising from drunk driving. The TxDOT Drive Sober, No Regrets program is launching in time for the football season. TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams explains:

Fall football is a time-honored tradition in our state, but one regrettable decision to drink and drive could turn game day into jail time or a deadly crash. Whether fans are tailgating with friends or celebrating their team’s big win, we want everyone to enjoy the season responsibly.

The Drive Sober, No Regrets initiative will include outreach events at university and college campuses across the state. These programs will include video exhibits as well as testimonials from people who have been impacted by drunk driving accidents.

Frequent DUI Accident Injuries

In addition to fatal injuries, there are other types of severe injuries that commonly occur to the innocent victims of a drunk driver. These frequent DUI accident injuries include:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Broken Bones
  • Soft Tissue Damage
  • Cuts and Lacerations
  • Burns

Compensation for DUI Accident Deaths

If you have lost a family member that has died in a Texas DUI accident, you may be entitled to compensation for losses that include:

  • Funeral Expenses
  • Last Medical Bills
  • Lost Companionship
  • Lost Wages and Support
  • Mental Anguish and Emotional Distress

In some cases, surviving family members may also be able to see what are known as punitive or exemplary damages in a lawsuit. This is additional compensation when the conduct of a person who cause an accident is considered particularly reckless or egregious.

DUI Deaths are All Preventable

Perhaps the grimmest statistic associated with drunk driving accidents, drunk driving injuries, and drunk driving deaths is that they are all preventable. 100% of Texas drunk driving accidents did not have to occur ever.
