New York City Scaffolding Collapse Injuries Three

|

A construction accident on New York’s Upper East Side injured three individuals. The accident involved a scaffolding collapse at a 26-story residential building at 220 East 65th Street between Second and Third Avenues. The building where the scaffolding accident occurred is known as The Concorde.

The New York construction accident occurred just before 4:00 p.m. The scaffold collapse involved a so-called sidewalk shed that was supported by the scaffolding. All of the individuals injured as a result of the scaffolding accident were workers at the site. No passersby or residents of the building were injured.

Of the three people injured, only one was transported to an area hospital. The other two workers evidently declined medical treatment.

The workers were involved in finishing work on the sidewalk shed supported by scaffolding at the time the accident occurred. About half of the sidewalk shed had been completed about two to three months before the accident in September 2021.

The remnants of the sidewalk shed, together with pieces of the scaffold itself, ended up strewn over the sidewalk, into the street, and across the driveway to The Concord building. While there is no information about the specific underlying cause of the construction accident, the City of New York Building Department has ordered the scaffolding and what remained of the shed after the accident.

A permit is in place that allowed for the placement of the scaffolding with the sidewalk shed until January 2022. The New York Building Department issued a violation against the contractor in the aftermath of the scaffolding accident for failing to safeguard the jobsite.

The scaffolding had been installed as part of a project mandated by New York City ordinance. The ordinance in question mandates that facades of buildings in the city must be inspected with regularity. That was the initial reason why the installation of the scaffolding took place at The Concorde building.

An investigation is underway to pinpoint the underlying cause or causes of the scaffolding accident. No timeframe has been provided in regard to the official investigation into the cause of this particular New York construction accident.

There are approximately 2.3 million construction workers in the United States at this juncture in time. Approximately 4,500 workers are injured in scaffolding accident annually. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 70 people are killed in scaffolding accident each year across the country.
