Three Killed in Amtrak Train Accident

|

At least three passengers are reported dead in an Amtrak train accident that occurred Saturday, September 25, in Montana. A yet to be determined number of passengers and crew members were injured in the derailment of the Seattle-bound Empire Building train. Amtrak has verified that eight cars on the train derailed. The Amtrak tarin accident occurred late Saturday afternoon near the town of Joplin, Montana. 141 passengers were on board the train, together with 16 crew members.

Amtrak issued a brief statement in the aftermath of the catastrophic Montana train accident:

“We are deeply saddened to learn local authorities are now confirming that three people have lost their lives as a result of this accident. There are also reported injuries among the passengers and crew members traveling on the train.”

As of dawn on Sunday morning, there is no specific information about the cause of the Montana Amtrak train accident. Investigators are at the scene and the investigation is expected to begin in earnest once the sun arises on Sunday. The National Transportation Safety Board or NTSB is hearing up the investigation into the deadly train derailment.

A spokesperson for Amtrak advised that the NTSB was sending 14 investigators to the scene of the derailment. These investigators are said to include experts in the area of railroad signals.

The accident appears to have occurred along a straight stretch of railway tracks. A derailment is not as commonplace along a straight stretch of tracks. These types of accidents oftentimes happen when a trail is rounding a curve.

The local sheriff’s department has announced that all of the individuals who were trapped on board the train have been rescued. No officials have been able to confirm the number of people injured as a result of the derailment. In addition, there is no information about the number of people taken to the hospital nor any reports about their conditions as of this time.

One passenger on the train reported that she had been sleeping at the time of the Amtrak train derailment accident. She described the initial sensation of the derailment as being akin to “extreme turbulence on a plane.” The woman was in a car that did not tip over in the derailment. She indicated that the car directly behind her own was tilted, the next car was completely tipped over, and the third car behind her own was tipped over, derailed, and completely detached from the train.

Residents of various towns near the Montana train accident were quick to mobilize and assist with rescue efforts. A city council member from the nearby town of Chester reported that she together with others assisted in getting approximately 60 passengers to a local school following the deadly train wreck.

No other trains were involved in the deadly derailment. Indeed, no other equipment or anything else outside of the train itself appears to have been involved in the accident.
