46 members of the University of New Hampshire Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity are being sought for arrest by law enforcement officials in Durham. The 46 men are being sought by law enforcement after being charged with crimes arising out of fraternity hazing.
At the present time, no specific information regarding what types of fraternity hazing occurred in regard to pledges of the University of New Hampshire Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter. The university itself is said to have learned to the alleged fraternity hazing during the earlier part of April of this year. Specifically, the fraternity hazing in question is said to have occurred on April 13 and involved new members of pledges of the Greek organization.
The university launched an investigation into the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity hazing allegations. Ultimately, university officials contacted the Durham Police Department because the school’s administration determined that it appeared that crimes had been committed as part of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity hazing.
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon national office had initiated its own investigation into alleged fraternity hazing said to have been perpetrated by the organization’s chapter at the University of New Hampshire. Upon learning of the involvement of law enforcement into the allegations of fraternity hazing, the national Sigma Alpha Epsilon organization suspended its own investigation, at least for the time being.
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon national organization issued a statement in response to the investigation, charges, and arrest warrants:
The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity Service Center was made aware of an incident in April involving members of our chapter at the University of New Hampshire. Upon learning of the alleged incident, SAE immediately issued a Cease and Desist of the chapter, began our own investigation, and informed the University of New Hampshire's administration. SAE's investigation was paused upon being notified about the opening of a police investigation. We are fully cooperating with the local authorities' investigation and have urged all of our members to do the same.
Sigma Alpha Epsilon denounces all acts of hazing and misconduct that do not represent the Fraternity's values defined by our creed, The True Gentleman.
If charged with fraternity hazing, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon member could face a fine up to $1,200. The Sigma Alpha Epsilon organization can face up to a $20,000 fine.
