Devastating Magellan Midstream Tank Farm Explosion Injures at Least Seven, Some Severely

|

A catastrophic Corpus Christi explosion injured at least seven people Saturday morning at the Magellan Midstream tank farm. Corpus Christi Fire Chief Robert Rocha advised that the fire itself has been contained. Nonetheless, search and rescue efforts continued at the Magellan tank farm Saturday afternoon. While seven individuals had been transported to area medical centers, there is no certainty that all workers and others at the tank farm have been accounted for at this time. Chief Rocha made clear that search and rescue operations would continue apace until all workers and anyone else that may have been at or in the vicinity of the Magellan Midstream tank farm are accounted for and identified.

Within several hours of the blast and fire, there remained some confusion about the state of those who were injured at the Magellan Midstream explosion. What information is available makes clear that at least some of the injured individuals are in critical condition. Names of all of those injured and identified are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

In addition to Corpus Christi first responders, the Texas Department of Public Safety dispatched emergency personnel to the scene. They are working with first responders on the ongoing search and rescue effort at the tank farm.

Directly after the Corpus Christi tank farm explosion, a substantial plume of black smoke arose over the side and began spreading outward. Smoke from blasts and fires like the Magellan Midstream tank farm explosion typically contains hazardous chemicals. The plume, and concerns about hazardous chemicals that might be contained in the smoke, resulted in a temporary shelter in place order being issued for residents and business in the area, according to Corpus Christi police.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is also involved at the scene and in the surrounding area. The agency is closely monitoring air quality in the area to ensure that all necessary safety precautions are promptly undertaken, including the shelter in place order that issued not long after the blast. Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that he would provide any other additional resources that may be necessary to efficiently and effectively respond to this tragic event and to ensure the safety of the public at large.

In the aftermath of the Magellan Midstream tank farm explosion, Governor Abbott issued a statement:

“The State of Texas is working closely with Magellan and Corpus Christi officials to aid in the emergency response efforts and to provide immediate help to those injured in the explosion. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is monitoring air quality in the area, and the Texas Division Of Emergency Management is on the ground to provide support. The Texas Department of Public Safety is also working to provide assistance to first responders on the ground. The state is ready to deploy additional resources to respond to this event and keep the community safe. Cecilia and I ask all Texans join us in prayer for those injured in this explosion, for our first responders, and for the safety of those in the area.”
