The Harris County Sheriff tweeted that at this time there is no order for people near or around the ExxonMobil Baytown plant to shelter in place. The possibility for a shelter-in-place order has not yet been ruled out by authorities. Residents in the area of the facility stated that they heard an explosion at about 1:00 a.m. on Thursday morning, December 23, 2021.

Management at the ExxonMobil Baytown facility issued a brief statement regarding the blast. The company has confirmed that emergency response teams continue to extinguish the fire at the complex. The company issued the statement via Twitter. ExxonMobil Baytown went on to advise:

Our first priority is people in the community and in our facilities. Air monitoring continues along the fence line. Available information shows no adverse impact at this time. We deeply regret any disruption or inconvenience that this incident may have caused the community.
