A Northern Virginia explosion accident in the city of Springfield injured three Washington Gas crew members and resulted in a large blaze that destroyed automobiles and damaged a nearby residence. A neighborhood evacuation was ordered as a result of the Springfield explosion accident. Firefighting crews from Fairfax County and Fort Belvoir were dispatched to the scene, which was located on Hooes Road at Fairfax County Parkway.
The condition of the Washington Gas workers injured in the Springfield gas accident is not known as of this time. The names of the injured has not been released pending notification of family members.
Little currently is known about the specific cause of the Northern Virginia accident. An investigation has commenced to pinpoint specific information about how the explosion occurred.
What is known is that a crew from Washington Gas was involved in an excavation at the time of the blast and blaze. The reasonable hypothesis at this juncture is that the workers struck an underground gas pipeline, which resulted in the damaging explosion. The ins and outs of how and why this mishap occurred is the focus of investigators.
Firefighters faced initial challenges fighting the fire because it was being fed by gas blowing from the ruptured pipeline. Ultimately, Washington Gas was able to stop the flow of flammable gas into the ruptured pipeline. Once that containment occurred, firefighters made progress to effectively distinguish the blaze.
Flames rose upwards to 70 feet at the height of the blaze. Because the fire was not able to be controlled initially due to the ongoing gas flow from the damaged pipeline, four homes ended up damaged as a result of the Northern Virginia explosion. At least three motor vehicles were destroyed as a result of the explosion and fire as well. At this time, there is no cost estimate for the property loss resulting from the Springfield explosion.
Explosion accidents of all types unfortunately are relatively commonplace in the United States. 715 explosion accidents occurred in the United States in 2019, the last year a complete set of statistics are available. That equates to an explosion accident approximately every 12 hours in the country. As a consequence, many people are injured annually in explosion accidents, even fatally so.
A single explosion accident has the potential for many innocent people being injured or killed. Millions of dollars in property loss are a reality of many explosion accidents.
