A massive Surfside building collapse occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, the residential structure located in a Miami Beach bedroom community. Very little information is yet available on everything from the case of the calamity and the number of casualties. What is known is that the collapse accurately can be described as a major catastrophe.
As Thursday dawned along the Miami Beach area, rescue workers were working frantically to remove victims from the rubble of the apartment or condominium building. Witnesses near the scene advised the media that rescue workers continue to pull men, women, and children from the wreckage. At least one boy was pulled from the remains of the partially collapsed building alive. Rescue team members were also pulling people from balconies on the remaining portion of the massively destroyed structure. Witnesses emphasize that there are still victims trapped in the rubble.
Over 80 fire department rescue units were at the scene of the catastrophe by dawn on Thursday. Hundreds of rescue crew personnel on site. A yet to be determined number of victims of the Surfside building collapse have been transported to Miami-area hospitals. The transport to medical centers is expected to continue well into the morning.
The apartment or condominium building is described as “very large.” Early information from the scene, largely coming from people who live in the neighborhood, indicates that the building had over 100 units. What is described as a “substantial portion” of the residential building collapsed, for reasons yet to be determined.
The building is described as a multi-story structure. With that said, images from the scene suggest that the collapsed section of the building stood at least 10 stories in height. Dozens of individual apartment of condominium units collapsed on one another at about 2:00 a.m. The alarming reality is that most residents are thought to have been at home at this time of night when the Surfside building collapse occurred.
As this article was being prepared, a bit more information came in about the Surfside building collapse. The structure was 12 stories tall. The building is located at Collins Avenue near 88th Street.
At 6:00 a.m. in Miami, a fire department official at the scene made the only statement issued so far from the rescue team about the developing situation:
“We’re on the scene so it’s still very active,” according to Sergeant Marian Cruz of Miami Dade Fire Rescue. “What I can tell you is the building is 12 floors. The entire back side of the building has collapsed.”
