Seven Workers Injured in CenterPoint Energy Gas Explosion Near Houston

|

A large CenterPoint Energy gas explosion accident sent seven workers to area hospitals after an incident involving a gas pipeline maintained by that company. One worker was airlifted to a medical center due to the serious nature of injuries while the remaining six were transported by ground ambulance. As of an hour following initial reports of the CenterPoint Energy gas explosion accident, no information was yet available on the specific injuries sustained by the injured gas pipeline workers or their current medical state.

The stage was set on Friday afternoon for the Houston-area gas pipeline blast. CenterPoint Energy workers were dispatched to the scene at a location in Klein, Texas. Workers from Comcast struck a gas pipeline while working on an excavation in Klein. The Comcast team reported the gas pipeline strike to CenterPoint. Evidently there was no explosion or fire associated with the Friday afternoon mishap.

While working to repair the pipeline damaged by the Comcast crew, CenterPoint Energy workers struck and ruptured an even larger, six-inch natural gas pipeline. The rupture by the repair crew resulted in the Klein natural gas pipeline explosion and resulting fire.

Residents living near the CenterPoint explosion accident site were immediately evacuated from their homes. As of an hour after the initial blast, only one residence had sustained damage. The damage to that home appears to have been to the exterior only. No members of the general public have yet been reported injured as a result of the Klein gas explosion.

The CenterPoint gas pipeline explosion ignited an electrical power service line. Electrical and gas power was shut off to over 800 residences as a result of the damage to the electrical power line. A yet to be determined number of homes have been impacted by the pair of gas pipeline incidents.

Comcast was said to be at the scene to repair its own service conduit that evidently had been out as a result of the severe storms that ripped through Texas last month. The goal of the Comcast team was to restore service to residents in the area that apparently had been without for some time because of the inclement weather.

Firefighters from the Klein Fire District were dispatched to the scene. Representatives from the the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office were on scene as well. They will be involved in the official investigation of the CenterPoint gas pipeline explosion. While the primary cause of the explosion appears to already have been identified, the investigation is designed to additionally determine how this type of injury-causing disaster could occur in the first instance.
