Workers Injured in Hagerstown Fuel Tank Explosion Accident

|

A worker at Advantage Landscaping and Construction was severely injured last Thursday in a Hagerstown fuel tank explosion accident. Another employee was also injured in the blast, although not as severely.

Information about the Maryland fuel tank explosion accident are sketchy at this time. What is known is that the severely injured employee was welding a 100-gallon fuel tank attached to a truck owned by the landscaping and construction business.

The explosion evidently occurred without any notice. The welder immediately was engulfed in flames. Other workers ran to the man’s aid and were able to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher in relatively short speed, but not before the worker sustained significant burns over his body.

Paramedics rapidly responded to the scene and were able to stabilize the severely burned worker. The man was then flown to John Hopkins Bayview Burn Center. He has been listed in critical condition since his admission to the burn center. His future prognosis is not yet known. The name of the worker has not been released.

Due to the nature of the explosion accident coupled with the nature of injuries sustained by the worker, his recovery period is expected to be long. The nature and scope of his injuries and losses are likely to include:

  • Significant medical expenses
  • Significant rehabilitation expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish and emotional distress
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Permanent disability
  • Lost wages

A second man was near the tank at the time of the explosion. He was blown a distance from the site of the fuel tank explosion, sustaining injuries in the possible. He was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. The name of this injured employee has not been injured either.

An investigation is only just underway to ascertain the cause of the Maryland explosion accident. A focus on the inquiry will be on whether or not there were any safety or workplace deficiencies that caused or contributed to the blast and injuries sustained by employees of the company. As of this time, no information has been released by officials about any prior safety issues at the facility. This does not mean that the company hasn’t been cited previously for safety issues by entities like the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

As noted, the Maryland explosion accident happened at the home base of a construction company. There is an array of different types of accidents most commonly associated with construction sites and construction companies in the United States. These are:

  • Falling
  • Struck by materials or objects
  • Crushed by equipment or heavy items
  • Electrocution
  • Explosions and fires
