Two weeks ago, a massive commercial fire erupted at a commercial building in Carson, California. The blaze occurred at a venue that housed stacks of pallets containing crates of alcohol wipes, a perfect storm for a major blaze. Indeed, multiple firehouses were called in to combat the fire. Four firefighters were hospitalized as a result of the conflagration.
Once the blaze was extinguished, Carson residents thought their community was out of harm’s way as far as the commercial fire was concerned. Two weeks later, people who reside in Carson have found that a very real nightmare with connection to the pallet warehouse fire may only just beginning.
Reports from Carson reveal that in the aftermath of the fire, cardboard and ethanol have been released from the site of fire-destroyed storage facility into the Dominquez Channel, a waterway that runs through the city of Carson. Combined with naturally occurring matter in the waterway, a malodorous gas is emitting from the Channel. The stench is spreading over the community, where it has engulfed residents for the past week to 10 days. There is no relief in sight.
Residents are now reporting becoming ill as a result of the stench with roots in the referenced fire that is expelling from the waterway. Residents report that the potentially harmful emissions from the water are becoming more severe with each passing day.
As a result of the growing stench menace, some Carson residents have been forced to evacuate their homes and businesses. The city has been working to find hotel rooms for displaced residents. In addition, the county has taken the step to provide at least some funding to aid people in paying the costs associated with hotel rooms during the time period in which they cannot return to their homes. While the funds seem to have been allocated by the county government, as of October 17, 2021, it does not appear that any one in the community who qualifies for this financial assistance has received any compensation whatsoever.
A spat of sorts now exists between the city and county governments. Officials from the city and the county are blaming the other for the lack of a proper response to the growing noxious fume problem plaguing Carson and its residents.
Local officials have now reached out to California Governor Gavin Newsom in an effort to tap funding to assist residents of Carson. In addition, the U.S. Representative whose district includes Carson has Governor Newsom to declare a state of emergency.
Local governmental officials announced on Friday that a substance is being added to the water in the waterway with hopes that it will address the ongoing problem. The substance being added to the waterway is thought to be capable of addressing and stopping the spread of the noxious odor.
