Bodies continue to be retrieved from the rubble of a luxury hotel located in Havana, Cuba, nearly three days after an 11:00 a.m. explosion at the iconic Hotel Saratoga. As of Friday afternoon, the death toll reached 35 people as is expected to rise. At least 20 people remain unaccounted for since the blast occurred.
In addition to the individuals killed in the Catastrophic explosion accident, over two dozen people were hospitalized. On Friday afternoon, 20 individuals remained in the hospital as a result of their injuries. Hotel Saratoga is located one block from the Cuba capitol building. It is a 96-room, five-star hotel located in the Old Havana district. The hotel had been closed for two years and was in the process of reopening at the time the deadly explosion occurred. Hotel Saratoga is owned by Grupo de Turismo Gaviota SA.
In addition to the damage caused to Hotel Saratoga, the blast damaged other nearby buildings as well:
- The historic Marti Theater located in relatively close proximity to Hotel Saratoga suffered significant damage.
- The blast caused major damage to the Calvary Baptist Church as well.
- The explosion caused devastating damage to a neighboring residential building. That damage included the complete destruction of a portion of both buildings that connected them with one another.
- It is unclear at this time as to whether any individuals in surrounding properties were injured as a result of the Cuba hotel explosion accident.
An investigation is underway into the cause of the Havana hotel explosion. The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, has announced that terrorism is not the cause of the blast. Rather, the President stated that the cause of the Havana hotel explosion accident appears to have something to do with a gas leak or something else associated with the gas service to the building. No specific timeframe has been announced for the completion of the investigation.
